Sadly the UK has lost it's virgin natural woodland. Woodlands have been managed by man since we began using timber and firewood.
Most woodlands today are either managed for forestry or have been intensively managed historically, then neglected. Such as charcoal oak coppice.
Neglecting a woodland after man has interfered for centuries usually creates a single age structure, closed canopy, lack of species diversity, few to no veteran or mature trees and subsequently a lack of biodiversity.
What we do..... to rectify these issues
- Selective felling and thinning
- Light/shade management
- Woodland structure improvement
- Veteranisation of selected trees
- Glade and Ride Creation
- Haloing trees
- Managing threats to ancient & remnant features
- Vegetation management
- Standing and ground deadwood creation/ringbarking
