Woodland Management

Woodland Management

Woodland with healthy undergrowth

At Woodlands and Wetlands, we manage woodlands to enhance biodiversity and create
habitats for wildlife. Our approach goes beyond simply maintaining trees – we work with
nature to encourage a healthy, resilient woodland ecosystem.
One of the most important aspects of our work is retaining deadwood, both standing and on
the ground. Far from being waste, deadwood is a vital resource for countless species. It
provides food and shelter for fungi, insects, and other invertebrates, which in turn support
birds, bats, and small mammals.

Standing dead trees offer natural roosting sites for bats and
nesting cavities for birds, while fallen logs create safe havens for amphibians, reptiles, and
invertebrates.

We also introduce new species of native trees and shrubs to increase diversity and
strengthen the woodland against pests, disease, and climate change. By creating natural
nesting and roosting opportunities within living and dead trees, we help wildlife to flourish
year-round.
